Airless Sprayer Maintenance: How to Keep Your Machine in Top Condition
Proper maintenance of your airless sprayer is essential for long service life, consistent performance, and avoiding costly repairs. Follow these simple steps after every use and your GROG machine will deliver reliable results for years.
After Every Use — Cleaning Routine
Step 1 — Relieve Pressure
- Always relieve pressure before disconnecting any hoses
- Trigger the gun into a waste bucket to release remaining pressure
- Turn the pressure control to minimum
Step 2 — Flush the System
- Place the suction tube in a bucket of clean water
- Run the machine until clean water flows through the gun
- For solvent-based materials, flush with the appropriate solvent first, then water
Step 3 — Clean the Gun and Tip
- Remove the tip and tip guard
- Clean with a soft brush and water or solvent
- Check the tip for wear — replace if the spray pattern is distorted
- Clean the gun filter
Step 4 — Clean the Filters
- Remove and clean the inlet strainer
- Check the manifold filter
- Replace filters if damaged or heavily clogged
Step 5 — Lubricate
- Apply a small amount of pump oil to the packing nut
- This prevents the packing from drying out during storage
- For longer storage, run a small amount of pump oil through the system
Weekly Maintenance
- Check all hose connections for leaks
- Inspect hoses for cracks, cuts, or abrasion
- Check the spray gun trigger mechanism
- Lubricate moving parts as required
- Check pressure gauge accuracy
Monthly Maintenance
- Inspect pump packings for wear
- Check valve balls and seats
- Inspect the motor brushes (for brush motor models)
- Check all electrical connections
- Test safety pressure relief valve
Storage Tips
- Never store with paint or plaster inside the machine
- Always flush thoroughly before storage
- Store in a dry, frost-free location
- Leave a small amount of pump oil in the system
- Hang hoses loosely — do not coil tightly
Common Problems and Solutions
Machine loses pressure: → Check and clean filters → Inspect valve balls for wear → Check pump packings
Uneven spray pattern: → Clean or replace the tip → Check material consistency → Inspect gun filter
Machine will not prime: → Check suction hose for air leaks → Clean inlet strainer → Check foot valve
Conclusion
A well-maintained airless sprayer will give you years of reliable service. Taking 10–15 minutes to clean and check your machine after every job prevents 90% of common problems and protects your investment.
